The woman was rescued from the wreckage of her four-wheel-drive before being flown to The Alfred hospital with abdominal injuries. Last night she was in a stable condition.

The force of the crash caused the truck to flip, before it rolled more than 600 metres down the road.

A 50-year-old man and 46-year-old woman had to be pried from the truck, which was extensively damaged.

Witness Ron McCready was amazed the three people involved in the crash had survived.

“I ran over to see the truck on its side and the driver and female passenger stuck inside,” he said.

“The cabin door had caved in on them and they were completely wedged in. Another passing car luckily had a crowbar so we ended up freeing them legs-first out through the top of the truck.”

Paramedics treated the 50-year-old truck driver for suspected shoulder injuries.

The female passenger, 46, was treated for head injuries and both were taken to Bendigo Hospital for further treatment.

Police, SES and fire crews secured the site and closed the Northern Highway, near the Toolleen-Axedale Road.

CFA crews were engaged to contain a grassfire on the side of the road that was sparked when scaffolding beams fell from the back of the truck.

The highway was blocked for more than four hours, after heavy hauling was called to tow the truck.
