Kidnapping and Murder of Daniel Pearl - Karachi, Pakistan - January 23, 2002


On January 23, 2002, Daniel Pearl was kidnapped in Karachi, Pakistan. Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was pursuing a story on shoe bomber Richard Reid, who attempted to detonate a bomb on a transatlantic flight just one month prior.

On February 21, 2002, a video was posted on the Internet depicting Daniel Pearl’s murder. Pearl’s remains were found in May and were returned to the United States.

One month later, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and three other suspects were charged with murder for their role in Pearl’s kidnapping and murder. On July 15, 2002, they were convicted in Pakistan, with Sheikh receiving the death penalty.

The Rewards for Justice program is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information that brings to justice those responsible for this attack.
