Colombo, SRI LANKA - Co-hosts Sri Lanka sets up a grudge game against Maldives in the semi final of ongoing SAFF championship. Sri Lanka, who topped group B after beating Bangladesh 1-0 today, now have their best chance of taking revenge of their loss against Maldives in the semi final of 1997’s tournament in Kathmandu.

It was Sri Lanka’s Romi, who scored the only goal of the game against Bangladesh when a well executed shot found net after deflecting off a defender in the 73rd minute. The defeat confirmed the exit of former champions Bangladesh in the tournament and give way to tournament underdogs, Bhutan, to reach their first semi final in a regional football event.

Bhutan bagged a shocking 3-1 win over Afghanistan, whom many thought would get a semi final berth.

Bhutan’s Dorji took the lead in the 13th minute through a rebounded ball, but Afghanistan created numerous chances in the half to level and even take the lead but poor finishing at their front cost them heavily at the end.

Fourteen minutes before full time Gylesthin doubled the lead for Bhutan in a counter attack, sending the ball into an empty net.

In the 80th minute Gylesthin once again scored through a header in front of the goal.

Three minutes to regular time Afghanistan’s Habib scored a consolation goal.

Now Bhutan will travel Maldives to meet defending champions India in Male’ and co-hosts Maldives has to take a flight to Colombo to face their arch rivals Sri Lanka in their home soil.

Maldives and Sri Lanka’s last meeting in the competition came in 2005’s edition held in Karachi, where Maldives beat a weak Sri Lankan side 2-0 in the group stage. But the image is completely different now, especially facing them at home.

Semi final matches will be played on 11th June at 1600hrs in Male’ and 1930hrs in Colombo.

GO MALDIVES!!! Do toho Maledivy!!! It was just one unlucky loss (against India), you are now in the semifinals - you want it, you get it! Keep the spirit high and you must believe in your own skills and selfconfidence. GOOD LUCK in Sri Lanka and go to revenge against India in the final! Pán tréner Jankech, stále držíme palce, určite to nebude ľahké, ale veríme, že sa Vám to podarí. Veľa šťastia!

Insha-allah we will win. Maldives is the only team who plays fairplay. It is very difficult for Lanka to quit Ashfaq, oppu, Isse, Tom and Bonda

if im not mistaken i think i just saw som criketing names in one of the comments... its not the time to start the blame game again. its just one loss and everyone knows we playd wel in all three games it was just bad luck we cudnt win the last. so its not just the right time to crack up against FAM or Jankech. lets just see through the tournament and then talk about the improvements.. gud luck team. hope for gud amount of suppor from the maldivians in sri lanka.

Jancesh I do not understand your way of handling our national team. from 3 games we got just one goal from strikers, usually we found nets through difenders. I am sure our game plan need to be reviewed. We have got quality in the squad but we are lacking firing power up front. I am sure i can handle this squad far better than you. We have got Real Mardrid class stikers but if you do not know how to use these weapons we will end up in pain. Last night i was closely watching India vs Maldives. I found it was like practice sesseon. 2 Kilo hardly contributes and there was no supply to Dhangadey. You played high ball-game wile you know we cannot beat India in the air, instead It will be very effective low-bal one touch game against India. 3 Games we played there was'nt any tactical approache. Do not think we have beaten Pakistan and Nepalese beacuse we played better it was just pressure from the fans. Now you need to find out what are the weakness of Sri lankans and take advantages and find ways of responding their threats. Thease tactics always be different for each opponents. Last three games I hardly found these areas are focused and being in practice. Part of my blame goes to FAM too for unprofessionaly handling our squad last 15 years, beleive me you cannot play professional games in this way. You cannot just make impact by appointing a Eurpean manager. I have not found in the world such a foot balling body like FAM, despite repeated failures they do not know to welcome others...Fisical and tachnical side is same as 10 years. What I am trying to say is they are more than 100 ways to improve our level these days. Any way as Maldivian i wish good luck for our players....

If the officials are good, Maldives can beat any side in SAARC without much difficulties.

Maldives will definitely win against if sri lanka is playing the way they played today against bangladesh. There was no good combination and their strikers channa and jayasuriya cant do much. The goal was just by luck and lanka could only start playing when bangladeshi players got tired at the end of the match. Guyz i am givin 100% sure that maldives will beat lanka cox i ve seen both the teams play and maldives is much better despite playing away from hope. And there will be a lot of maldivians in sugathadhasa stadium most of those who is residing here in lanka. For lanka, this way you play u will never improve ur football.
