Who makes Apple’s products?

Apple released a 156-company list of the companies that make up its supply chain on Friday. Many of the companies on the list were already identified as Apple suppliers, thanks to gadgets blogs that post “teardowns” that expose the guts of Apple products, but this is the first time the firm has disclosed that information.

The full list, as it appears on Apple’s Supplier Responsibility page, appears below:

CES 2012: What is this #MysteryGadget?

The 2012 Consumer Electronics Show officially kicked off Tuesday. Amid the sometimes familiar televisions and appliances that are trotted out for critics and buyers are a whole host of gadgets whose uses aren’t as obvious.

Wednesday, we posted a picture of these Zipbuds earphones and asked you to identify it. The Zipbuds offer a new solution to keep your cords from tangling, and come in pink, blue and black.

For Thursday’s gadget, Washington Post videographer AJ Chavar snapped a picture of this contraption at the show. What do you think it is?

Today in Tech: CES 2012, Day ‘0’

Today was the media preview day of the Consumer Electronics Show, and companies had plenty to show off to eager press folks today.

The Consumer Electronics Show officially starts Tuesday, but it will kick off this evening in Las Vegas with a keynote speech from Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer. A Microsoft executive has given the speech at the trade show for 14 years, but the company recently announced that this would be its last turn at the show.

Plenty of companies had announcements to make today, including Intel, AT&T, LG and Sharp.

Intel showed off its ultrabooks, or ultrathin notebooks, while AT&T and Verizon both showcased new phones. For AT&T, it was the Samsung Galaxy Note, Nokia Lumia and HTC Titan II; meanwhile, Verizon introduced the Motorola Droid 4 and the BlackBerry Curve 9370.

LG had plenty to show off as it worked to advance the trends of smart, connected televisions through a partnership with Google TV, while competitor Sharp doubled down on its commitment to making really huge televisions — the company will ship an 80-inch television this spring and will introduce 17 new televisions that are 60 inches or larger.

There are plenty of trends to watch for this convention, but the main themes are greener energy, smarter homes and appliances, and thinner, more powerful laptops.
