Libya’s LAP Green looking for Africa expansion

Libya’s telecommunication holding company LAP Green Network announced that it was to inaugurate new telecom services in Sierra Leone and Togo as well as wireless services in South Sudan as part of its expansion plan since the North African country emerged from a civil war this past fall.

According to a statement from the company, LAP Green hopes to continue to move into the continent’s telecom industry with future plans to develop operations in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea.

It said that these markets are being looked into as “prospective” acquisitions for licenses or mobile phone operators.

LAP Green said that its goal is “to situate the company alongside regional powerhouses MTN Group, Vodacom Group and France Telecom-Orange, all of which boast a strong presence in Africa.” The company, which has been able to largely come out of the political tension in Libya without much negativity, will “aggressively seek growth opportunities on the continent that are of a strategic fit.”

The LAP Green management had previously discussed such potential deals during the rule of Muammar Gaddafi, who was ousted earlier this year, but due to the management’s relationship with the deposed, and now killed, dictator, countries were apprehensive of moving forward on agreements.

Now, LAP’s new management believes that it will be able to solidify its push into the continent and enable to company to make inroads in markets across the continent.
