Religious and philosophical concepts

The exact priorities, pathways and detailed work-plan of the TWG responsible for Theme 3 will be defined by the Group itself and will follow the general scheme. This TWG will consider the religious and philosophical achievements of the ancient world, and particularly the ways in which that patrimony has been given meaning in different political and cultural contexts from the medieval to the modern and contemporary world; it will examine the Reformation as a focal point for understanding and comparing different confessional and national approaches to the Reformation period; it will deal with Humanism and the Enlightenment; the emergence of lay philosophy and new religious movements, observing and contextualising the different approaches to and understandings of such phenomena in different parts of Europe; it will examine the significance of religious identities as linked to national and ethnic sentiments.
