Reflexology

Here you can read about reflexology therapy. You can also find information on the use of reflexology in Denmark.

Reflexology is a form of massage applied to the feet.

Reflexology is based on the theory that each body organ is connected to an area on the feet via nerve and energy pathways. In reflexology, this area is called a ‘reflex zone’.

According to the theory, soreness in a reflex zone indicates that the organ in question is not functioning properly. By treating the reflex zones with massage and various forms of pressure, the reflexologist will release healing energy, which stimulates the organs and restores the balance of the body.

In Denmark acupuncture is used to treat acute and chronic medical conditions and for pain relief and preventive treatment.

Such conditions could be e.g.:

  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Stress
  • Indigestion
  • Allergies
  • Migraine
  • Sports injuries

At a number of Danish hospitals reflexology is used stimulate contractions during childbirth.

Reflexology is also used to prevent disease and enhance quality of life.

The Cochrane Library is an international database, which collects and assesses scientific studies on the effectiveness of a treatment.

Via the link below you can see what Cochrane concludes about the effect of reflexology.

Your body may react to reflexology in various ways.

Typical reactions are:

  • Fatigue
  • Relaxation
  • Change in character of urine and faeces
  • Temporary aggravation of the symptoms you wish to have treated

A reflexologist typically will not conceive such reactions as adverse effects in the usual sense of the word, but as part of the healing process.

As a user there are no special precautions for you to be aware of in connection with using reflexology.

In Denmark reflexologies are not authorized.

Reflexologist is not a protected title.

When admitted to a Danish hospital you can choose to receive treatment from a reflexologist from outside.

You will have to pay for the treatment yourself.

In 2005 the National Institute of Public Health conducted a survey on the use of among other things reflexology in the Danish population.
