NEWPORT (AP) -- Newport has its first woman mayor.
The city council voted unanimously Monday to make Jeanne-Marie Napolitano its chairwoman and mayor.
Napolitano, who has served on the council since 1991, said she is "overwhelmed" by the selection.
The vote to make Napolitano mayor is preliminary, but is unlikely to change when the official vote takes place after the new council is sworn into office in January.
Napolitano says her biggest challenges will be dealing with the City by the Sea's environmental and pollution problems at a time of fiscal constraints.
