Catcliffe Viaduct and Railway

Catcliffe in 1932

The nine arch Catcliffe viaduct was planned and built in 1899, by Bernard Hartley, to carry the Sheffield District Railway across the Rother Valley. It opened in May 1900 with an intermediate station at Catcliffe.

The railway was part of the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway, later part of the Great Central Railway.

Passenger trains ran from Sheffield Midland to the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway at Langwith and later to Mansfield.

The station closed in 1939

In the photograph, the buildings beneath the second arch were occupied by :

Banks Pottery

A family owned company Banks Pottery, relatives of Gordon Banks, formed in 1972, by Brenda and Audrey Banks are based in Railway Arches at Catcliffe. Banks Pottery has gained a valuable reputation within South Yorkshire and its surrounding areas as purveyors of great value high quality catering grade crockery and pottery.

In 2002 Nick Banks, nephew of Gordon, ex-drummer with British band Pulp, began to take over the day to day operations of Banks Pottery as Audrey and Brenda took a more relaxed role as semi retired.

The Plough, pubic house is on the left and the Red Lion, not on the photo, is the other side of the viaduct.
