Player Development Framework
Over the next four years, one of Basketball New Zealand’s key aims is to “Succeed in the Game”. The organisation’s player development framework and associated programming is a key part of the plan to achieve this goal.
Basketball New Zealand’s high performance programme has adopted a new strategy in terms of talent identification, athlete selection and service provisions for our high performance athletes.
SPARC, the New Zealand government agency that funds sport in this country, has placed Basketball New Zealand in a contestable high performance pool with a number of other sports, making it much more difficult for basketball to access the level of funding we have had in previous years.
As a result of this shift, most funds we receive from SPARC are now to be allocated to our senior women’s and senior men’s national teams in their build-up to their respective pinnacle events.
Junior development athletes will receive high performance services on a regional basis.

National Senior Teams
National Junior Teams
Basketball New Zealand’s national junior team programme has two main objectives, firstly to provide elite-level programming for national junior athletes in order to prepare them for FIBA junior competitions and other international activities. Secondly, the programmes aim to provide long term development for athletes, coach and support staff, and a pathway to senior international programmes. Click here for further details.
Regional Development Programme
Basketball New Zealand’s regional development is conducted through a camp-based programme, aimed at delivering national level programming on a regional basis. The programme is targeted at all national junior squad athletes and staff, as well as individuals identified with the potential to participate at that level of the programme.
Cluster Camp Programme
Basketball New Zealand’s cluster camp programme forms a key part of the basketball pathway providing development opportunities, identification and an entry point for Basketball New Zealand’s high performance development programme.
Koru Tour Programme
The Koru Tour provides opportunities for national developmental teams to travel to Australia and compete in the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup, the premier development tournament for Australian state country programmes.
Association Programmes
Association and affiliated school programmes are the entry point for competitive basketball activities in New Zealand and the key forum for the ongoing development of athletes, coaches and support staff to progress through the basketball pathway to higher levels of the sport.
