New Suikoden set for February 9 in Japan

New entry in RPG series coming to the PSP; Konami's online store to offer different bundles for the title.

Fans of the classic role-playing game series Suikoden wishing for a new entry in the franchise can finally get their fix with the recent Konami announcement that the new title, dubbed Genso Suikoden Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki, will be out on February 9 for the PSP.

The regular version of the game will be selling for 5,980 yen ($77.30) on retail shelves. Gamers in Japan can also order the various limited editions of the game from the Konami Style online shop.

The "Special Version" is priced at 12,000 yen ($155) and contains the soundtrack CD, a drama CD, and an art book. Another set bundles the "Special Version" alongside the Genso Suikoden encyclopedia, which costs 19,500 yen ($251) altogether.

The encyclopedia, which chronicles all of the characters and details of past Suikoden titles, is also sold separately for 9,450 yen ($122). Alternatively, gamers can buy another bundle featuring the game, the OST, and drama CD for just 9,580 yen ($123.75). There is no official word from Konami concerning a downloadable version on the PlayStation Network or about an English version of the game.

The game's story stars a warrior sent back to the past to gather a group of soldiers to combat a threat that appears every 100 years to wipe out all forms of life. Beyond that, Konami has yet to share more details concerning game mechanics and battle systems.

i think putting this on a handheld is a great idea jrpg's lose too much of their charm with advanced graphics the hayday was when there were more simple graphics and an overhead view and more focused on story than close camera view graphics

the first two Suikoden games were the most amazing rpg's ever made and the fifth was playable but had some major flaws like no world map. The Third and forth games were so terrible that they made me feel embarrassed to say i am a Suikoden fan. The third had some ridiculous experience system that made the game incredibly simple and the characterization was fine however the story was complete garbage it bounced all over the place and didnt focus on a main protagonist and his adventures liberating a continent which was part of the charm of the first two.

Why is everyone saying "I've been waiting for this since 5" and "portable entry wut?!" when Suikoden Tierkreis was released for DS a few years ago? It was a pretty strong game too, so I'm not worried about portable downsizing.

Sure, they could put it on the main PS console like their successful previous games and make a fortune while giving us a worthwhile RPG for the PS3 which is few and far between, but instead will put it on the fading handheld with the smaller audience with less money to be made.

They can keep it in Japan for all I care. Idiots.

Awesome, but given the PSP's dwindling support, I wouldn't be surprised if this one didn't make it outside of Japan.

Suikoden V was awesome though, so I'm all in either way.

    @System4Ever

Importing it would be a great idea, if Nintendo didn't have region locking on their system to prevent a WII from North American from playing a game released in the European market. Sure, I could crack my WII to get around that, but if I have to put that much effort into it why bother paying for it?

    AT. LAST.

Now, when will the game be released stateside? This must happen and it must happen soon. I demand it.

I hear it time and again how the gaming market over in the east is suffering greatly in creative aspects and profits falling and such. But Seeing how great titles such as the tales games and now Suikoden are released but never localized here in the states or europe just darn near makes a western gamer go breserk in jealious rage. I don't mind buying only digital if I have too but not having the option at all just angers me and bewilders me all in the same...

Seeing as how this is for PSP and the PSP is not doing well in NA, I'm not very encouraged. I can only hope that the Vita does well in NA and Konami localizes and releases this as a digital download. NA/EU UMD release would be even better, especially with all the goodies. Otherwise, looks like I'll be importing. Really want this game!

I heard a few people here on Gamespot saying there hasn't been a new Suikoden in a while and they hoped they'd see one soon.

Well, it might not be on the PS3 like many fans had hoped, but at least there is a new one that fans of that series get to look forward to.

Make an English version, Konami. This is me asking in a calm, clear tone. But if you don't.... Well, I won't be so calm... Let's just say napalm will be involved.

When it comes to Suikoden, price matters not...
Just bring that Special Version & Encylopedia to Europe, I'll gladly pay 250€ for it

Prices in Japan are much higher, as people get higher wages over there. If this came to the US you could expect the price to drop.

  • TheTenth10

what are those prices??? 77$ for a portable console game??? 122$ for a book???

The encyclopedia is a fan's dream come true, expensive but still, I hope Konami don't forget about the millions of fans outside of Japan.

Astonishingly expensive. I'm certainly interested in the encyclopedia, but it's probably just a matter of time before it is transcribed and translated.

I haven't had my Suikoden fix in this generation so localization please?

  • crdeath27

    Posted Nov 24, 2011 10:10 pm GMT

It will be one of the best RPG's of this generation, and will get a European release, yet they will refuse to release it in the U.S. even though it has already been translated to English.

Oh wait, that was Xenoblade. Let's hope Konami is smarter than Nintendo.

From what I've read about this game, the only connection it has to anything Suikoden related is the title.
