Yemima Avidar-Tchernovitz

Yemima Avidar-Tchernovitz (1909-1998) was born into a literary family in Vilnius, Lithuania, where Hebrew was spoken at home. In 1922, she immigrated with her family to Eretz Israel.
As a young girl, she taught in a school for workers` children in Tel Aviv and co-published a series of children`s books. From 1929 to 1932, she studied education and psychology with Alfred Adler and Anna Freud at Berlin University, and also graduated from the Jugendheim Seminar. She worked for over 20 years in kindergartens in Israel, both as a teacher and as principal.
Avidar-Tchernovitz began publishing at age 12. She published 43 books for children and young readers. A number of her books have been adapted for stage and screen. She translated many children`s classics into Hebrew, and received both the Ze`ev Prize (1983) and the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement (1984). Her diaries were published posthumously, in 2003.
