Edwards out, Stephens in against Cerrone at UFC on FUEL TV 3

An undisclosed injury has forced lightweight Yves Edwards (41-18-1 MMA, 9-6 UFC) to withdraw from a fight with Donald Cerrone (17-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at UFC on FUEL TV 3.

Sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that veteran Jeremy Stephens (20-7 MMA, 7-6 UFC) has been tapped to replace Edwards.

UFC on FUEL TV 3 takes place May 15 at Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. The event's main card airs live on FUEL TV while preliminary-card fights are expected to stream on Facebook.

It's not clear where Stephens vs. Cerrone will be situated on the lineup.
Edwards had hoped to rebound from a decision loss to "The Ultimate Fighter 13" winner Tony Ferguson. The longtime UFC vet had previously stopped Rafaello Oliveira by TKO at UFC on Versus 6.

Once considered the uncrowned UFC lightweight champ in the UFC lightweight division's dark days, Edwards fell on hard times in 2005 and 2006 and was forced to work his way back to the UFC. He eventually did so, making good on a short-notice fight at UFC Fight Night 22. Since then, he's gone 3-2 in the octagon and once earned dual bonuses for "Submission of the Night" and "Fight of the Night" in a victory over Cody McKenzie at UFC Fight Night 23.

Stephens is also on the mend after a split-decision loss to the surging Anthony Pettis, who knocked out Joe Lauzon this past weekend at UFC 144 for an almost certain No. 1 contender spot.

Although not always successful against top-ranked competition, Stephens has carved out a firm spot in the lightweight division with four performance bonuses and wins over Sam Stout, Marcus Davis and Cole Miller. He currently trains at Victory MMA and Alliance MMA in San Diego.

Cerrone, meanwhile, saw an impressive six-fight win streak come to an end when he was outstruck and outpointed by Nate Diaz at UFC 141. The loss halted what many fans believed was a march toward title contention (Diaz is now slated to fight Jim Miller in a fight that could have an impact on the title picture.) A two-time title challenger in the now-defunct WEC, "Cowboy" trains at Jackson/Winkeljohn's MMA in Albuquerque, N.M.

Nice!  I can dig this, I'd even go as far as to say that he'll be an even tougher opponent for Cerrone.

lytle23 on Feb 27, 2012 at 12:58 pm ET
he probably beats cerrone

AKC on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:04 pm ET
+1 he beats cerrone on a close split dec

captncomeshot on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:15 pm ET
Much rather see this fight anyway...

SamMMAFanBronx on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:28 pm ET
Cerrone is going to whoop that heathens ass. Mark my words.

MarcP on Feb 28, 2012 at 8:21 am ET

Cerrone needs a win in a big way. Im a big fan of Both guys though.Stephens is all heart when he fights. you have to put that guy away cause thats what hes lookin to do to you.I hope they get "FOTN"

Great matchup

Archiewho on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:36 pm ET
I agree that this is going to be a better fight anyway.  Cowboy by decision

IronJawJake on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:38 pm ET
Hope not, Cerrone fan here.

Popp24 on Feb 27, 2012 at 12:51 pm ET
Yeah I like this fight better.

tmaisons on Feb 27, 2012 at 12:54 pm ET
I was looking forward to Cereone/Edwards but Stephens is a good replacement and should still be a good fight.

kane27 on Feb 27, 2012 at 12:57 pm ET
He gave Pettis a tough time. Can't wait to see him fight Cowboy. FOTN potential.

MMA5820 on Feb 27, 2012 at 12:59 pm ET
FOTN for sure

guys off topic but IMO the edgar vs henderson was closer than uninamous decision.

LordDash on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:02 pm ET
Not really.  Remember, a Unanimous decision simply means all the Judges agree that the same person won the fight.  Doesnt mean the fight wasnt close.  For example, all 3 Judges could score a fight 3-2, and completely disagree on who won which rounds, yet if they all scored it 3-2 for the same fighter, it will be a UD.

Happy_Meal_MMA on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:04 pm ET
Likewise, they could all agree on 50-45, but each of the rounds may have been tight as hell. Looks like a blowout on paper but really isn't if you watch the fight.

TheSkilledWon on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:14 pm ET
unanimous just means all 3 judges agreed on who won...doesnt mean it wasnt razor close

ZubSean on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:03 pm ET
Damn,... that fight is a great one,...but I'm a fan of both guys so it kinda sux,.. Gonna go to a Dec for Cerrone or a TKO for Stephens!

TeamJacksonWink on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:06 pm ET
Gonna be a barnburner for sure! Cerrone wont let this go to decision though!

Unbelievable on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:07 pm ET
Now THIS is a great fight! For those of you who don't think so, go back and watch Jeremy Stephens scrap, and count his FOTN awards.

WHMoff33 on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:07 pm ET
Why not Sam Stout?

Happy_Meal_MMA on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:12 pm ET
Stout is just plain awful..... yeah that's it

TheSkilledWon on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:18 pm ET
sam stout is awful? youre joking right? alot of his fights end in some kind of " __ of the night bonus"..if nothing else, hes a pretty entertaining fighter and a good test for someone climbing the ranks...solid gatekeeper IMO

agent_smith on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:38 pm ET
not sure how stout can be considered awful...

jdizzle0209 on Feb 27, 2012 at 2:15 pm ET
He is in fact the exact opposite of awful...  Stout is quite good to say the least.

grsp1 on Feb 27, 2012 at 6:07 pm ET
Ask Yves Edwards how awful he is lol ...

AIfxtream on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:08 pm ET
Wow junkie really pathetic. I can't post a simple comment like

"Why is Cowboy wasting his time by fighting opponents that aren't in the top 10?"

without getting deleted.... WTF can u post then?

TheSkilledWon on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:20 pm ET
siver and diaz were both hovering around top 10...cerrone, while an awesome fighter, got absolutely tooled in his last fight...i think the fight w/ stephens is an entertaining match up

AIfxtream on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:28 pm ET
Cowboy is always in exciting fights and this will be exciting 2, but i think he needs to keep fighting top 10 guys all i was saying

SamMMAFanBronx on Feb 27, 2012 at 2:03 pm ET
When you want to fight as often as Cerrone wants to fight, you cannot expect to be pitted against a top 10 opponents every time. The only borderline top 10 win he has is against a guy who is going to featherweight (Siver).

markdaprodigy on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:09 pm ET
Damn this fight is going to be fireworks...i dont know what happened in cerrone's last fight but i hope he comes ready to fight this time, diaz made him look bad

Bobbyflizzle on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:13 pm ET
I really like this fight on paper, but I don't see it playing out the way everyone thinks its going to with a standup war that Stephens gets the better of. I see Cerrone taking this fight to the floor first chance he gets and using his superior ju jitsu to submit Stephens. Jeremy is one of my favorite fighters because of the power in his hands and the aggressiveness that he fights with, but unfortunately, these Iowa fighters are usually not well versed in the submission game despite how strong they are in the striking game. Hopefully Cerrone gives the fans what they want and bangs with Stephens, but if he is smart and wants a quick night at the office, this fight is going to the ground.

TheSkilledWon on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:16 pm ET
i like this fight better ... they should set up yves v. gomi

combatvideo1775 on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:16 pm ET
Nice! I got Cerrone via TKO! I think The Cowboy will come back strong!

In a quasi-related question, anyone know any news about when the hell Sean Sherk is coming back? I keep hearing he is returning early 2012, but not seeing anything so far.

BUCK31 on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:33 pm ET
He's still trying to perfect his cycling time to avoid being caught again.

xXxKoscheckxXx on Feb 27, 2012 at 4:31 pm ET
Where is the "like" button on here...lol

kane27 on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:38 pm ET
I don't see him TKO him...i think it's a decision. Guillard couldn't knock him out and he has some seriously quick and powerful hands. I hope Cerrone learns to stick to a gameplan...if he would he'd be a much more dominant lightweight.

BUCK31 on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:23 pm ET
Can't stand Cerrone, I was all smiles when Nate was beating the tar out of him. Hope Stephens follows in his footsteps, and beats down the Cowboy.

racenut08 on Feb 27, 2012 at 5:02 pm ET
I'm not a cowboy fan either, but he earned my respect after that fight. No whining or excuses.

humanlock on Feb 27, 2012 at 1:24 pm ET
Much better fight IMO. Ithink Cowboy takes this, but it's gonna be close.

ocemaloc on Feb 27, 2012 at 2:02 pm ET

I like the matchup but I totally agree with a lot of posts - I have Cerrone in the top 10 at 155; Stephens is an entertaining fighter, never a contender. Cowboy gets back on track with a convincing win in this one.

CF3 on Feb 27, 2012 at 2:08 pm ET
way better.

Iron_Monkey on Feb 27, 2012 at 2:37 pm ET
miller/diaz v pettis on the night bendo and frankie have a rematch (assuming frankie gets what he wants) then, the winners of those 2 fights fight for the title, you are welcome joe silva.

Imthatmasseffect on Feb 27, 2012 at 2:54 pm ET
Pettis had to Lay and Prey and bleed out a split againts Heathen, i have Heathens on a 3rd KO

Haveasy on Feb 27, 2012 at 3:01 pm ET
This fight is going to be awesome! Sucks because they are both two of my favorite fighters

Singularity on Feb 27, 2012 at 3:29 pm ET
Go get some Donald Ceronaaayyyyyyy!!!

ddl0043 on Feb 27, 2012 at 5:43 pm ET
haha jackson's voice echoes this line every time i hear Cowboy's name

HugS on Feb 27, 2012 at 3:56 pm ET
I swear, Cerrone gets involved in the best replacement fights. Him vs Charles Oliveira, him vs Dennis Siver, and now him vs Jeremy Stephens, all three of these fights have been better than the original, intended match ups.

-AMPED4MMA- on Feb 27, 2012 at 4:22 pm ET
Great match-up! Potentially FOTN here. I like both fighters and they always bring it (except for Cerrone sleeping against Diaz), but I have to go with Stephens as I am a huge fan of his. And whomever stated Stephens would get KO'd is delusional. Even though anything is possible, Stephens has only been rocked once to my knowledge when he was hit by a solid right hand from Marcus Davis, who he eventually KO'd in the third round. So, since Stephens may have some difficulty getting inside Cerrone's reach and land one of his big bombs which could result in a finish, I will then go with Jeremy by UD or SD.

ConditFTW on Feb 27, 2012 at 5:58 pm ET
Charles Oliveira wasn't the best a good replacement fight at lightweight... I saw that mismatch coming from a mile away.

TONY2GUNS on Feb 27, 2012 at 5:10 pm ET
i like the matchup too bad cerrone was solely looking for diaz approval last time and not trying to win the fight. he could of shut his "punk ******" ass up.

jensjord on Feb 27, 2012 at 5:11 pm ET
Cowboy was a 3 time title challenger in the WEC, not 2.  just saying.

Imthatmasseffect on Feb 27, 2012 at 8:11 pm ET
Pettis was Champion and stephens could have won that fight if the judges was watching the right fight, jus saying.

hismajesty on Feb 27, 2012 at 8:44 pm ET
Good replacement for Edwards..Stephens better check those leg kicks!

WeAreLegion2012 on Feb 27, 2012 at 9:20 pm ET
After the poor showing against diaz i hope cerrone loses his next  3 fights and gets booted.

theazbeachbum on Feb 27, 2012 at 10:16 pm ET
In the WEC and UFC this guy has had 7 FOTN, 1 Knockout of the night and 1 Submission of the night

So this guy has one bad fight and you want him to go 0-3 and booted?

You sir, are an idiot

prodigy101 on Feb 27, 2012 at 10:56 pm ET
Love this fight! Two guys that love to stand and trade, can't go wrong there. I say Stephens by UD in a fight of the night. A little off subject but i'm watching Edgar Henderson replay and dang that translator has a sexy voice! Someone said it earlier on this site just can't remember who but dude was right. I don't speak japanese at all but it was nice!

grim_reaper on Feb 28, 2012 at 9:21 am ET
Stephens is a gamer and turns no fight down...gotta like that...his fights are never boring...his submission defense has really, really improved...I still see him likely going down to a choke at the hands of Cerrone though...certainly the most likely scenario...but Cerrone is apt to stand early and prove he can hang with anyone...so I think Stephens gets his chance early...

kane27 on Feb 28, 2012 at 10:11 am ET
He didn't hang with Nate his last fight under any circumstances. I see Cowboys chin being too good to get knocked out and same for Stephens. Decision or submission victory for Cerrone as long as he does what he needs to do instead of what he wants to do like he did against Diaz.

Yamakawa on Feb 28, 2012 at 1:01 pm ET
Cowboy via decision. Great match up, Edwards wouldn't have been as competitive.
