Did I mind that Prim died? No, actually that made it better. But we got a half ass explanation on why she chose Peeta.

Agreed with all of that (though I would not be satisfied if she simply didn't choose). And yeah, no closure towards the end, really...

I have quite a few complaints about the book, including the terrible pacing and the sense that the ending was "forced" in that it was a convenient way to show that Coin was just like Snow and to force Gale out of the picture (and thus leave Katniss with no choice but Peeta), but it was nowhere near the atrocity that Twilight seems to be.

Eh. I don't have an issue with what actually happened during the ending; it just felt badly paced and forced, in a way, regarding the way it happened. I had not considered who might fit the role, but I did imagine Haymitch as a very Woody Harrelson-like figure, so I thought he fit perfectly when he was cast.

Agreed. It fit for the story Collins wanted to tell, but it did feel forced, and Mockingjay in general was a bit badly paced. And yeah, part of it was definitely to basically leave Katniss with no choice but to pick Peeta. The romantic issue was basically just waved away rather than being solidly resolved.
