A few years ago, I took my teen son to see a physician. This was a new experience for me, since I have relied for 50 years exclusively on Christian Science — a Bible-based approach to individual spiritual growth that includes spiritual healing — for all my health needs and for those of my children. Imagine my surprise after the physician visit, when no one at the "Pay Here" desk of the clinic knew what to do when I said I was going to pay for the services myself, right then. And once they understood that I meant it, they cut my $500 bill in half. It was my first foray into the healthcare system and it gave me a firsthand view of just a couple of the reasons there is such a need for healthcare reform. Since then, I've been regularly involved at both the state and federal level in this issue.
