Former Coug Derrick Low Inks Deal with Israeli Basketball Super League Team

AVENTURA, Fla. - Former Washington State University men's basketball standout Derrick Low has signed a one-year contract to play for the Maccabi Haifa professional basketball team of the Israeli Basketball Super League, the organization announced Tuesday.

A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Low was a four-year starter at Washington State from 2004-2008, and ranks second on WSU's all-time career minutes played (3,706), fourth in three-point field goals made (220), eighth in free throw percentage (.800), eighth in steals (145), and 11th in scoring (1,288 points). In his senior season in 2007-08, he started all 35 games, averaging 14.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 steals. Low was named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference Third Team, ranking third in Pac-10 only games in three-point field goals made (2.63 per game), seventh in steals (1.55 per game), 11th in minutes played (33.26), and 13th in scoring (14.8 points per game).

Last season the 6-foot-2-inch point guard played for BC Siauliai in Lithuania's top division, averaging 13.1 points (.476 from beyond the arc), 3.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.7 steals in 28 games played. Low was named All-Lithuanian LKL Import Player of the Year by Eurobasket.com. In six EuroCup games in 2009-10, he averaged 18.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. Low played two games against Hapoel Jerusalem, scoring 20 points and 22 points respectively. In the Baltic League last season, he averaged 15.0 points (.483 from beyond the arc), 3.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.5 steals in 22 games.

Low has also played professionally in France (Rouen) and Australia (Sydney Spirit). In high school at Iolani HS, Low was named Gatorade Player of the Year in his final three seasons. He was a McDonald's All-America nominee, posting a 101-4 record against State competition during his four years of high school.

Low joins a Maccabi Haifa roster that features Sasha Bratic, Yoni Nir, Avi Ben-Chimol, former Arizona State guard Derek Glasser and Robert Rothbart. Maccabi Haifa will hold its third-annual U.S. tryouts at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. July 20 and 21 to sign some of the elite talent in the United States.

Maccabi Haifa will travel to the United States to play the NBA's New Jersey Nets in the first preseason game at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Oct.3, 2010. Maccabi Haifa's 30-minute magazine TV show, Inside Israeli Basketball, (www.insideisraelibasketball.com) is aired monthly from November to June on the YES Network (Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network), SUN Sports (home to the Miami Heat), Comcast Versus (home to the NHL), and Jewish Life Television (available in over 25 million homes in the U.S.). The show captures the intricacies of Israel and the Super League seen through the eyes of Maccabi Haifa's American players and their Israeli counterparts.

Maccabi Haifa, an Israeli Basketball Super League team, has a long and storied legacy as they were one of the original eight teams to form the Premier League during the 1954 season. This past season under the ownership of Rosen, the team earned an appearance in both the Premier League Finals as well as the State Cup Finals in the team's first season back in the Premier League after a 10-year absence.
