Cape Town - A former University of Stellenbosch student was sentenced by the Western Cape High Court on Monday to 30 years in prison for kidnapping, raping and killing a fellow student.
Jacobus Johannes Eksteen, 27, was convicted of killing Erin van Rensburg in 2009. Her body was found in a shallow grave in Elandsbaai on the Cape west coast.
Eksteen was arrested a day after Van Rensburg went missing.
At the time of his arrest, he was a final year Computer Science student, and had become friendly with Van Rensburg's brother, Byron.
The brother and sister shared an apartment and Eksteen had been working on Byron's computer when she disappeared.
Eksteen appeared before Judge President John Hlope on Monday.
The proceedings took the form of a plea-bargain, in which all three charges were taken as one for the purposes of sentence.
