Fred Kennedy As Recipient of the Steve Young Award
Thursday, March 12 – Fairmont Royal York Hotel – 7:00 p.m.

Canadian Music Week announces “Fearless” Fred Kennedy as the recipient of the inaugural 2009 Steve Young Award. The award will be presented during the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m., Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto. Tickets for the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards are available for purchase on the Canadian Music Week website at or by calling 905.858.4747.

"Fearless" Fred Kennedy wasn’t always fearless. He paid his dues in small markets – CIGO 101.5 FM, Port Hawkesbury, NS and CKDR 800 AM Dryden, ON – until opting to take a part-time on-air position at Power 97, CJKR 97.5 FM in Winnipeg, MB. It was on Power 97 that he began on-air stunting for The BJ and Hal Show, and where Hal Anderson dubbed him “Fearless Fred”. Fred then moved on to work at The Goat, CKLM 106.1 FM, Lloydminster, with Ryan Zimmerman. When Zimmerman took over as Program Director on The Bear, CFBR 100.3 FM in Edmonton, it wasn’t long until Fred’s career changed again. He was asked to host evenings there and in the fall of 2006 took over the afternoon drive, where he remains today.

The Steve Young Award was created in the memory of its namesake to honour a rising star in the Canadian broadcast industry. Steve Young was among the most popular of those who consult radio, and was always prepared to advise and mentor young broadcasters. This award reflects the support he offered so many. The recipient is chosen by “The Friends of Steve Young”, a Canadian broadcaster committee, and will be awarded annually to a broadcaster under the age of thirty.
