Salman Khan and Sajid-Wajid combo has always treated us with good music. Well, they are back with a bang in Dabangg. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan starts the fireworks with Tere mast mast do nain. This rustic love song, sung in Rahat’s Sufi style, with Indian orchestration in the back ground is a perfect mood lifter. It also has a duet version,   where Shreya Ghoshal’s voice adds to its merits.

Then we have the item number Munni badnam hui sung by Mamta Sharma and Aishwarya and composed by guest composer Lalit Pandit (who has written it too). This is a raunchy number probably picturised on Malaika Arora Khan and lyrics like ‘main zhandu baam hui’ may boggle the mind. But its fast tempo and rhythmic beats may help you forget the nonsensical lyrics.

The best offering of the album, Chori kiya re jiya, follows. This love duet, sung in dulcet tones by Sonu Niigaam and Shreya Ghoshal, feels out of place in this otherwise fast-tempoed album. But it is pleasant to the ears nevertheless and reminds you that Sonu is still our premier singer. The next, Hud hud dabangg, sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Wajid is on the lines of Beera from Raavan. Like Beera, it describes the qualities of the protagonist. Sukhwinder’s powerful voice corresponds well with lyrics which are dipped liberally in veer rasa. Humka peeni hai, which follows, is a typical ‘boys-having-fun’ song. Wajid, Master Salim and Shabab Sabri sing it with the required verve.

Dabangg theme is the last offering of the OST. Just like the Wanted theme, this too has some pulsating music juxtaposed with Salman Khan mouthing choice dialogues from the film. Oh, it also has remixes from most of the songs but they don’t add to the album’s sheen.

Overall, the soundtrack scores high on energy quotient. But its time Sajid-Wajid gave some thought to melody too. They do have the potential, as seen in songs such as Don’t say alvida (Main Aur Mrs Khanna) and Chori kiya re jiya from this very album. We hope they don’t chose melody over making a crowd pleasing album.
