- Married to Cathy Jo for 36 years (in August).
- Has two kids: Nicole and Joshua (married to Amber).
- Has a dog named Maximus.
- Physics major, math and computer minor when computers still used punchcards.
- Retired from the Navy after serving for 22 years as a Top Gun fighter pilot and commander.
- Flew A-7s and FA 18 Strike Fighters (the Hornet - same plane as the Blue Angels)
- Earned two Meritorious Service medals for leadership.
- 3200 flight hours and 300+ landings on aircraft carriers.
- Is an inventor and has a patent for an LED light communication system.
- Elected to the House of Representatives from Sauk Rapids area in 2002 and served 4 terms.
- Created the M.A.G. (Military Action Group) to reform Minnesota's veteran's issues / policies.
- Built a team for an international agricultural venture in Laos and Thailand
- Created a community relations council / outreach project, 501c4, to explore international economic development opportunities to create jobs in the United States.
- Fisherman.
- NRA member.
- Took a big party of Hmong leaders squirrel hunting last fall.
- Golfer.
- SCUBA diver.
- Did 20 pull-ups at the State Fair to achieve the Marines challenge.
- Governing elder in his church.
- Past board members and pilot for Wings of Mercy, which provides flights to people in remote areas to get to medical facilities.
- Lifetime member of VFW and yearly member of American Legion.
