Ashmit Patel on a comeback trail
18 Aug 2009  He’s not had a release in over two years. Yet, as three of his films ready for release this year, actor Ashmit Patel wouldn’t call it his comeback. “I was never out of the industry. In the two years since my last release, I did some films that for some reason never released, while others like Toss got delayed because of the multiplex strike, recession, etc. Several factors together just compounded the delay. But I must add that the industry here can be quite brutal if you aren’t out there and doing your thing,” he says. And Ashmit was doing his thing, albeit not back home. “I’ve just finished filming a Hollywood film called Florida Road in Durban. The film may not be a big production as per Hollywood standards, but what excites me is that I’m not just playing ‘a’ character, but the central character,” reveals Ashmit, adding that the film, directed by Brad Glass, is about an Indian family based in Durban, but doesn’t dwell on the foreign-born-confused-desi theme. “Florida Road is about two generations in a family and their clashes over values. I play a struggling writer who dreams of writing a Hollywood screenplay. Vipin Sharma (who played Darsheel Safary’s father in Taare Zameen Par) plays my father, while Priyanshu Chatterjee joins the action as my elder brother.” With his Bollywood films Toss, The Flag and Kabhi Kahin ready for release, Florida Road in post-production, and rumours of him being part of another Hollywood production — American Empire — Ashmit believes his career is back on track. And though most of his earlier films haven’t been financially viable, Ashmit doesn’t regret being a part of any of them. “My films may not have done well at the BO, but that’s not in my hands. For me what mattered is that I worked with established banners and directors of some standing. But yes, there have been films that I have done for friends. I won’t call them mistakes, but I guess I have to learn from the past and keep friendship aside from my career,” he says. What he does admit, though, is that the regular Bollywood song-and-dance routine is not his cup of tea. “I feel a large degree of comfort in Hollywood. Moreover, my style of acting is very subtle, which sometimes doesn’t go well with the genre of movies here,” he says.
