THE new Director-General of the State Security Services (SSS), Mr. Ita Ekpenyong, graduated from the University of Calabar with a BA (Hons) in History in 1982. He obtained a Masters in Philosophy (M.Phil) from the same university.

An urbane operative, he served as SSS director in Bauchi, Kwara, Lagos, Anambra states and the FCT at different times. He was Acting National Director (Operations) of the SSS at the headquarters in Abuja. He was the Founding Director of the Institute of Security Studies, Lower Usman Dam Area in Abuja where he was saddled with the training of Intelligence Officers.

Following his pioneering role in managing the SSS training institution, he was made director, Senior Staff Development Centre of the SSS in Bauchi. The Centre is the equivalent of the Command and Staff College, Jaji, of the Army.

Married to a Yoruba, Tope, the manner in which Ekpenyong managed his beats in Lagos and Anambra states gave him a career jump.

The last election in Anambra State was the icing of the cake that endeared him to President Goodluck Jonathan as he was determined to protect the sanctity of the ballot by preventing rigging.
