Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt participated Wednesday in a protest voicing solidarity with the Syrian people in Downtown Beirut.
The protest was attended by PSP MP Akram Chehayeb and PSP minister Wael Abu Faour as well as other March 14 officials and activists, New TV reported.
“The Syrian people’s revolution will win,” the station quoted Jumblatt as saying.
It added that the PSP leader also “announced his and the Soueida Druze’s support for the Syrian revolution.”
Meanwhile, a protest in support of the Syrian regime was also held in Downtown Beirut, New TV said, adding that security forces heavily deployed to the area.
Lebanon's political scene is split between March 8 supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime and the March 14 pro-Western camp.
Jumblatt left the March 14 alliance in 2009 and supported March 8’s effort to nominate Prime Minister Najib Mikati in 2011, but in recent weeks has started voicing his opposition to the Syrian regime.
Syria has witnessed anti-regime protests since mid-March. The United Nations estimates that more than 6,000 people have been killed in the regime’s crackdown on dissent.
