Town of Gardur, Reykjanes, South Iceland
Garšur, as it is called, is furthest out on the Reykjanestį or the point that extends north from the end of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Garšur is an old community; in 1910 there were 647 inhabitants, the second largest community after Keflavķk. Now the population has risen to 1300. The rich fishing grounds by the shore remain the town“s economic base.

A great deal of fishing was carried out here in earlier centuries, and there are relics to be found along the shore. Garšur is a strong fishing center with fish processing firms, but because of the lack of a harbor, the catches must be landed in Sandgerši or Keflavķk. A large number of construction contractors operate in Garšur, and service businesses are doing well, providing a variety of jobs.

The Sušurnes Home for Senior Citizens is in Garšur. For tourists there is much of interest to see, especially the lighthouse on Garšskagi, which is now an historical relic and not operated. For bird-watchers the area is a pure paradise. Many delightin walking along the shore and enjoying the view – the sea, the bird life, and in the distance Snęfellsjökull Glacier in all its glory. There is a museum in Garšskagi.

The golf course in Leiran is one of the most beautiful in Iceland. There is a camping ground in Garšskagi, and all services are available in Garšur: a magnificent sports center and a swimming pool with hot pots, exercise room, and sun benches.
