1986 Buckden Gravel Pits

The site covers 400 acres. Most of the
 gravel is used for  cement.At Buckden}
pits they have 1 excavator, 2 loading
 shovels, 1 bulldozer,1 washer and 1
desander. When they begin to extract
the gravel they take the topsoil off.
Then the crane picks up the gravel.
They dig the gravel down to about 4.5
 metres.The excavator lifts the gravel
to the desander which is like a sieve.
It then falls onto the conveyor belt
and the conveyor belt takes the gravel
up high.It drops the gravel and a
truck comes along and takes it to the
washer machine .There it is washed and
 graded.There is a weighbridge.When the
lorries come along they are weighed,
then they load up & are weighed again.
Each lorry carries 20 tons of gravel.
50 lorries leave the site daily. The
 site will be restored eventually.

In 2011 the BBC published the survey online and for six months invited updates to the photographs and text to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

Shortly afterwards the website was added to The National Archives’ UK Government Web Archive.

If you are reading this via UK Government Web Archive, then the original Domesday search function and contact form will not work. This is a consequence of the archiving process. See Using Domesday for more details.
