March 5, 2012 – Dennis Ross, who successfully facilitated the 1994 Israel-Jordan peace treaty and has worked for the George H. W. Bush, Clinton and Obama administrations, will join the faculty of the Program of Jewish Civilization (PJC) this fall.

“We are thrilled to have a public servant of Ambassador Ross’s caliber return to the PJC where he will impart his vast knowledge to the next generation of diplomats, Foreign Service officers and Middle East policy analysts,” says Jacques Berlinerblau, PJC director and associate professor of Jewish civilization.

Ross served as a fellow and counselor at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy counselor from 2001-2009, then became President Obama’s chief White House advisor on Middle East policy from 2009-2011.

During the 2008 academic year Ross served as a visiting professor of Jewish civilization at Georgetown and before that as an adjunct in the PJC.

Breadth of Experience

The author of several books, Ross has two decades of experience as a scholar and diplomat in Soviet and Middle East policy, and has worked closely with Secretaries of State James Baker, Warren Christopher as well as Madeleine Albright, now a professor at Georgetown.

Before he became special Middle East coordinator under President Clinton, Ross served as director of the State Department's policy planning staff in the first Bush administration. He also played a prominent role in U.S. policy toward the former Soviet Union, the unification of Germany and its integration into NATO, arms control negotiations and the 1991 Gulf War coalition.

Fantastic Environment

He rejoined the institute as a counselor in December 2011 and will begin teaching one course a semester at the university beginning this fall.

“I look forward to teaching and working with the Georgetown community,” Ross says. “It’s a fantastic environment for learning and the students are great.”

Ross is the author or co-author of several books on the peace process, including Myths, Illusions, and Peace: Finding a New Direction for America in the Middle East (Viking, 2009), co-authored with Washington Institute peace process expert David Makovsky.
