Iran says its handcraft exports have reached about 106 million dollars during first eight months of the current Iranian year (started March 21).

Ahmad Balan, an official with Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, says exports of hand-made artistic goods to other countries have grown six-fold from March to November compared with the same period in the past year.

The jump in exports shows an increased realization and appreciation for the value of Iranian handcrafts by the world.

He added that about 5.2 million people work in some 250 fields of the handicraft industry.

The official noted that the Iranian government plans to increase the industry's share of gross domestic product to 6 percent form the current 3 percent.

Experts say the tremendous beauty of the man-made goods produced in Iran and easy accessibility to the goods are among the reasons behind the attraction toward this trade.

The appetite of Europe and US collectors for Iranian hand crafts could also another factor.

Inlay, kilim, and pendants have been the larger categories of exports from Iran during the past year.
