secret trial five is a punk band that write songs about zombies eating world leaders, freeing prisoners in guantanamo bay, and more. they started out in 2006 in vancouver (unceded coast salish territory), and when lead singer sena moved to toronto in 2008, she connected with toronto-based musicians sidra and kareem, who ended up joining the band. then in 2010, they added nat and gabi to the band.

the band’s name comes from the name given to five Muslim men, who in 2006, were detained using ‘secret evidence’, spending most of their time in solitary confinement in canadian prisons without charge, but since all have been released (under strict bail conditions/house arrest).

the band has been identified as being part of a genre called “taqwacore”, but they now actively reject that association, as it not only limits them, but also, taqwacore has caused a racist, islamophobic and sensationalist media frenzy. it has also been wrongly reported that the inspiration behind secret trial five are the writings of michael muhammad knight: which is false…
