Dr Cheryl Allum

Cheryl gained her BA Honours degree in Archaeology from the University of Reading (1992-1995), excavating in the Southern Hebrides and at Bordesley Abbey during this time. She subsequently worked as a field archaeologist predominantly for Oxford Archaeology with a brief period at Thames Valley Archaeological Services. In 1997, Cheryl returned to the University of Reading as a post-graduate and in 2001 successfully submitted her PhD on the use of Quarr stone in relation to the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and medieval stone building industries of Southern England.

A return to her native Somerset eventually led to a job at Context One Archaeological Services (COAS), predominantly writing archaeology reports but also developing her interest in worked stone and buildings archaeology. In 2007 Cheryl was appointed as the Research Assistant for a pilot project led by her PhD supervisor, Professor Roberta Gilchrist, assessing the historic excavation archive of Glastonbury Abbey. This led to a successful application for a full 40-month project begun in 2009 following a one-year return to COAS. Cheryl is employed by the University of Reading as the Post-Doctoral Research Assistant for the project while enjoying the benefits of being based at Glastonbury Abbey.
