BBC Great Expectations

The serialisation of Charles Dickens Great Expectations starring Gillian Anderson, Ray Winstone and Douglas Booth to mention just a few, will be one of the BBC's big dramas over the Christmas period. Holdenby House will feature as the exterior of Satis House, the home of Miss Havisham.

The BBC props department spent 4 days preparing the exterior of the house, the courtyard and the driveway to become the iconic house that forms the backdrop to this classic story. The team worked increcibly hard and it was fascinating to see Holdenby transformed into a decaying house in such a short space of time.

James Lowther (owner of Holdenby) said “We were delighted recently to have had the BBC at Holdenby filming the exterior of Satis House for their adaptation of Great Expectations to be broadcast over Christmas.

It took 80 tons of mud, weeds and creepers up the drive to turn the outside of Holdenby into the decaying Satis House shown in the adaptation. With the brilliant job that the BBC props team did, it was a slightly scary reminder of what can happen to a house like Holdenby if you don’t keep up the maintenance!"

I am happy to report that the BBC have done an equally brilliant job of putting it back to the good condition it was in before the filming so we can welcome our school visits and wedding couples back to the house in great shape.”
