Fox News tells the tale of Rob Carson, a physician at a small Australian hospital, who used a DeWalt cordless drill from the maintenance shop to bore a hole into the skull of Nicholas Rossi, 13, who fell helmetless off his bicycle and suffered a severe head injury.
The problem was that the small hospital didn't have neurological drills, Fox said. So the doctor improvised.
"If you are in that situation, you just do those things," the physician said. "It is just a part of the job and I had a very good team of people helping me."
The BBC's version of the story also contains a video link.
Fox said that Nicholas fell off the bike last Friday. When he complained of a headache, his mother Karen, a nurse, took him to the hospital.
Nicholas was airlifted after the drilling to a Melbourne and he left the hospital Tuesday, the day he turned 13, Fox said.
