Spotlight on Spring 2012 Titles

"Saudo’s faux adult patter, translated persuasively by Bedrick, is dead on (“We said one story, and we’ve already read two. That’s enough for tonight”). Go to F**k to Sleep tried to convey a difficulty of the bedtime routine for parents; this is more imaginative, and can actually be read aloud to children.” – Starred ReviewPublishers Weekly

“Young insomniacs will recognize themselves in the antics of the oversized dad and enjoy poring over the naively drawn details found on every page.” – Kirkus Reviews

“Shimmering, color-saturated landscapes and a message about cherishing small things make this English-language debut by a Swiss team an unexpected treasure.” - Starred ReviewPublishers Weekly

“Uplifting in more ways than one, this prizewinning import suggests that little things can change lives – and perhaps even the world.” – Starred ReviewKirkus Reviews

“An impressive picture book that is modern, fresh and will have readers looking for tiny treasures in their lives too.” – Waking Brain Cells

“I’m a big fan of Brooklyn-based publishing company Enchanted Lion […] they always have excellent taste in artists and unique storytellers. Their latest release, a prizewinning Swiss import [Little Bird], is no exception.” – Ben Partridge, Apartment Therapy

"All of Geisert's etchings are things of antique beauty--feasts for the eyes, the dandelion leaves alone are print-quality items--but the hail of lava has an otherworldly sinister loveliness. [...] This is a story of magic, etched with an everydayness that encourages readers to invite wonder, even bewilderment, into their lives." -- Kirkus Reviews

COMING SOON: Coppernickel Goes Mondrian and Beach Feet!

ICE by Arthur Geisert, the second volume in our Stories Without Words series, is a 2011 New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book as well as a 2011 Parents' Choice Gold Award winner.

"Geisert's (Oops) resourceful pig families are back, and the exaggerated landscape format of this volume allows Geisert an expansive stage for this wordless adventure. This particular group of pigs lives in wooden shelters on a desert island, shaded from the punishing sun by tarps. With their water supply running low, the pigs gather around a table at night and consult a globe; then, in the story's most ravishing sequence, they launch their balloon-powered air-schooner--sails billowing, pennants flying--for the seas east of Greenland. But what is the long, mysterious parcel tied underneath it? It's a sail to guide a gigantic iceberg back, towed behind the air-schooner. Carved up into blocks, the iceberg replenishes their well and provides air conditioning, too. This is an especially satisfying Geisert title, because the task is essential for the pigs' survival and they carry it off with such élan. And the air-schooner, a charming marriage of sailing and balloon technology, is a standout among Geisert's many contraptions. Nominee for best spread: the ship under sail, towing the iceberg, in silhouette against the full moon."

OUR NEWEST REVIEW - from the Wall Street Journal here .

"Share this book with a child who loves looking closely. Or even better, curl up together and share some time with ice, invention and imagination." - Tasha Saecker, wakingbraincells.com

See what Pamela Paul at The New York Times Book Review says about ICE: here .

"The detailed and enchanting illustrations in mostly muted colors effectively reveal the inventiveness and the emotions of the pigs as they struggle through the heat, diligently build their their flying boat, work together to use the ice creatively and celebrate their success.
One of the joys of this wordless picture book is that at each reading, the reader notices something new in the pictures and so spins a tale that is slightly different to the one told before. Ice is a beautiful story that will delight and spark the imagination of any reader. Highly recommended." - Maya Fleischmann, for curledupkids.com

FOX AND HEN TOGETHER, the follow up to our award winning favorite
THE CHICKEN THIEF, receives a STARRED REVIEW in Publishers Weekly.

"Who says married life is dull? The sequel to The Chicken Thief has as much action and drama as it's predecessor, and is just as weirdly wonderful as it moves from courtship (of sorts) to cohabitation." - Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"A sweet loopy look at domestic travail filtered through a wickedly subversive lens." - Kirkus

"B. Rodriguez's The Chicken Thief and Fox and Hen Together are two of the most charming wordless picture books I've ever encountered. Check 'em out." - Nancy Pearl, www.nancypearl.com

Fox and Hen Together continues the story of The Chicken Thief (2010), focusing on Fox and Hen's life together. As the illustrations quickly reveal, Crab has become a fast friend, Fox and Hen have an empty refrigerator, and Hen has laid an egg. As for the fate of her egg when left in the hands of a hungry Fox, you will just have to read the book to find out! And here again the chase is on, but this time it's Hen who is in pursuit.
