Officials and human rights groups in Nigeria said Monday that about 500 people had died in weekend ethnic violence near the central city of Jos, considerably more than what had initially been reported. The first two pictures in our slide show were taken in the nearby village of Dogo Nahawa by Akintunde Akinleye, photographing for Reuters.

A picture by Mr. Akinleye in December 2006 of a man rinsing soot from his face at the scene of a petroleum gas pipeline explosion near Lagos (above) won first prize in the World Press Photo Contest for spot news single. He returned to the cooling theme in a picture taken Feb. 2 in Lagos, which ran in Pictures of the Day (Slide 8). Mr. Akinleye is 39 and lives in Lagos.

The five American Muslim men who were arrested last month in Pakistan on suspicion of plotting terrorist acts shouted to reporters that they were being tortured. Slide 10 is by Muhammed Muheisen of The Associated Press, whose work was briefly profiled on Jan. 29.
