Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader and former minister Nalini Mohanty, who started his political career in 1977 as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Rajnagar constituency in Kendrapara district, passed away here today at a private hospital at the age of 63.
Nalini, a seven time MLA from Rajnangar was ill for a long period and was admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on October 11 last year due to chest pain. Later he was shifted to All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Delhi on November 2 when his condition deteriorated further. Following improvement in health, he returned from Delhi and was later admitted to Sum Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
In his 32 year political career from 1977 to 2009, Nalini, a close friend of former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik served several portfolios in state as well as Centre.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Governor M C Bhandare have expressed grief over Nalini's death.
