Bosnia opens trial of Muslims for war crimes

SARAJEVO (Reuters) - Eight Bosnian Muslim wartime officials went on trial on Thursday accused of the torture and abuse of Serbs in detention camps near the Serb-besieged capital Sarajevo, 20 years after the start of the 1992-95 war.

Few cases have been opened against Muslim officials since the war, fueling Serb accusations against the Sarajevo authorities of practicing selective justice.

In the latest case, camp guards and local officials are accused of crimes committed in three detention camps in the Sarajevo suburb of Hadzici during the 43-month siege of the city by Bosnian Serb forces on the hilltops.

Prosecutor Marjan Pogacnik said four prisoners died in the camps.

"The detainees there were taken into hallways and beaten or forced to beat each other by guards and other individuals until they fainted," Pogacnik said. "They were denied medical assistance or access to international humanitarian agencies."

Some 11,500 people died in the siege of Sarajevo, while Bosnian Serb forces seized large parts of the country and cleansed them of non-Serbs after Muslims and Croats voted for independence from socialist Yugoslavia.

The vast majority of the 100,000 people killed in the war were Muslims, but war crimes were also committed by Bosnian Muslim and Croat forces.

Pogacnik said defendants Mustafa Djelilovic, the former head of the nearby Hadzici local assembly, and Fadil Covic, the former police chief in the neighborhood, were aware of the inhumane conditions at the camps but failed to act or move the prisoners. The six other accused were guards at the camps.

The Bosnian court was opened in 2005 to prosecute low- and mid-ranking war crime cases and ease the burden on the Hague-based war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, which focuses on top war crimes indictees such as Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic and his military chief Ratko Mladic.

Ah...20 years...um...inaction probably has cost a lot of evidence. No doubt there were crimes on both sides - neither side is innocent of wrongdoing. But it is a judicial shame to have waited this long to look into this.

      Al Qaeda's Balkan Links

The Balkans' uncharacteristically silent exit from the world stage as the most prominent international hot spot of the last decade belies its status as a major recruiting and training center of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network. By feeding off the region's impoverished republics and taking root in the unsettled diplomatic aftermath of the Bosnia and Kosovo conflicts, al Qaeda, along with Iranian Revolutionary Guard-sponsored terrorists, have burrowed their way into Europe's backyard. For the past 10 years, the most senior leaders of al Qaeda have visited the Balkans, including bin Laden himself on three occasions between 1994 and 1996. The Egyptian surgeon turned terrorist leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri has operated terrorist training camps, weapons of mass destruction factories and money-laundering and drug-trading networks throughout Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Bosnia. This has gone on for a decade. Many recruits to the Balkan wars came originally from Chechnya, a jihad in which Al Qaeda has also played a part. These activities have been exhaustively researched by Yossef Bodansky, the former director of the U.S. House of Representatives' Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare. The February testimony of an Islamist ringleader associated with the East Africa bombings have also helped throw light on these actions.

The USA backed the wrong side during that war. We should have backed serbia. The muslims have always been the ones committing genocide.

Finally I see that others besides the Serbs have been charged for war crimes in Bosnia. It would have been impossible for there not to have been war crimes committed against Serbs. It is human nature to get revenge so this is at least a step in the right direction.

Serbs were fighting the War On Terror a decade before 9/11

According to the 9/11 Commission Report, terror mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, along with three of the hijackers (Nawaf al Hazmi, Salem al Hazmi, and Khalid al Mihdhar), all fought in the Bosnian jihad.

In 1991, before the conflict erupted, the English edition of the (radical Bosnian Muslim leader) Alija Izetbegovic's Islamic Declaration (1970) was published in Sarajevo.
It specifically stated: "There can be neither peace nor coexistence between Arabia, the cradle of Islam and non-Islamic social and political institutions."
And his conclusion affirmed: The Islamic movement must, and can, take over power as soon as it is morally and numerically so strong that it can not only destroy the existing non- Islamic power, but also build up a new Islamic one’.

Muslims have been at war with infidels since 620 AD. And these pricks complain about the Crusades that happened 1000 years ago. Islam is still waging their crusade. Just no one has the stones to speak out....

This world would be a better place without muslims. I work with them everyday and they are by far the most dishonest of any group of people I have ever done business with. Lies, deception and greed drive these people. If they want something from you they will lie to your face and sell you their daughter to get it.

People, war crimes were commited by the Croats, Serbs, and Bosnian Muslims, the Bosnians getting the most casualties, during that time. IT WAS A WAR. Did you people not read the article or know anything about this war? I don't care what religion you are. It's not the religion that is commiting these acts its human beings being selfish and greedy and the fact that horrible war crimes were commited by all sides proves just that. Humanity at its most pathetic...

Islamic culture exists outside the realm of civilization, representing, as it does, the last large group of barbarians on the planet.
They live, but to die a violent death and enter a mythical paradise, filled with faux virgins.
They strive to spread their primitive ideas of religious, moral and civil reform across a planet, they are ill equipped to understand, let alone change and rule.
      Allahu akbar.
