girl mode?

Let's face it, there aren't as many sites to female personalities as there are to males. Fandom misogyny, intentional or not, is still rife across the community. When discussing the topic in mid-2009, Barbara of Persephone.nu and I (Shiori of Time-Stranger.net) decided that the best way to combat negative attitudes in our neck of the woods was to foster positive ideas in an enjoyable manner. Translation? Let's have a female personality site-making challenge!

So members of the Amassment community on LiveJournal signed up to participate in this exciting new project. For some it was the first attempt at tackling a dedication to a female personality, while for others it provided motivation to finish incomplete site ideas. In the end, we received over thirty applications for Girl Mode. Over the three month period the challenge ran, many participants had to pull out owing to real life commitments and computer concerns. But still, we had many stick to their guns and create some truly wonderful web works - it was very exciting to observe!

Something like Girl Mode can't obliterate negative attitudes towards female personalities, but it can help foster positive approaches to women (both real and fictional). Through this challenge, dozens of incredibly talented members of Amassment have crafted outstanding dedications to female personalities from video games, anime/manga, television, and beyond. So please, enjoy the sites created for this challenge - with any luck they might inspire others to consider making sites dedicated to female personalities!

the challenge

The Girl Mode Shrine Challenge was run between October and December 2009 through the Amassment LJ community. Participants signed up in September, noting the female personality they wished to build a dedication to. The participants then had three months to complete the shrine of choice. For a full background on the rules of the challenge, please click here. This challenge would not have been possible without the help of Barbara, Todd, Masao, Chrissy, Daphne, and everyone who participated or pitched in over at Amassment. It wasn't an easy challenge to run by any means, but the outstanding results speak for themselves. Thank you and please enjoy - Shiori.
