The Human Rights Act 1998

This Chapter deals with the Human Rights Act 1998. This Act of Parliament came into force in October 2000 and gives effect in United Kingdom law to the rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights.

The first two sections provide information about the Convention, where it comes from and what rights it protects.

The third section sets out how the Human Rights Act works, and how you can use it to enforce your Convention rights.

Finally, the last section sets out what happens when you are unable to enforce your Convention rights through the UK courts and want to take your case to the European Court of Human Rights.
