Minister of Finance of the Hellenic Republic, Dr. Philippos Sachinidis

Philippos Sachinidis was born in 1963 in Vancouver, B.C, Canada.

He studied Economics at the University of Piraeus' Graduate School of Industrial Studies and subsequently obtained his Master's degree from Queens College, City University of New York. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Manchester. Ηe was granted a scholarship by the Council of Economic and Social Research of the UK.

He taught Economics at the Manchester School of Management between 1991 and 1994.

He started his professional career as an economic analyst at the Foundation of Economic and Industrial Research (1994-1997) in Athens, Greece. He subsequently served as a Senior Economist at the National Bank of Greece (1997-2001) and as Special Advisor in the Economic Office of then Prime Minister Mr. Konstantinos Simitis (2001-2004).

He joined the Institute of Strategic and Economic Studies (ISTAME), a think-tank in Greece, in 2004 where he chaired the "Employment: Risks, Challenges, Prospects" Committee and was a member of the "State - Market and the Provision of Public Goods" Committee.

In 2007, he was elected as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament. Between 2007 and 2009 he was a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Production and Trade and the Secretary of the Growth Committee of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) party. He is also a member of the National Council of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) party.

Dr. Sachinidis was re-elected in the 2009 elections and took office as the Deputy Minister of Finance with responsibility for overseeing the Treasury and debt management policy. In June 2011 he was promoted to the position of Alternate Minister of Finance.

He was appointed Minister of Finance of the Hellenic Republic in March 2012. 

Dr. Sachinidis has a variety of publications in international and Greek academic journals and in the press.

Alternate Minister, Pantelis Economou

Pantelis Economou was born on December 20, 1950 in Athens. He is married to Irene Petropoulou and has two children Dimitris and Alexandros

He studied Mathematics at the University of Athens and received his MSc in Operational Research from the University of Sussex, England. He held managerial positions for twenty years in the private sector in both industry and services and then continued as a freelance business consultant.

He is a member of the Hellenic Mathematical Society and the Economic Chamber of Greece.

He is a member of PASOK since 1974. He is always elected as a member of the Central Committee and the National Council, and has been elected several times as a member of the Executive Office and the Political Council.

He was elected as an MP in Athens (Α) Constituency in 1996 and 2009. He participated in the following Committees:

• Standing Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs

• Standing Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice

• Committee on Armament Programs and Contracts

• Committee on Parliament Finances

• Intergroup Committee on examining the migration issue

• Investigation committee on the "SIEMENS" case

In June 2011 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Finance.

Deputy Minister of Finance, Ioannis Mourmouras

Ioannis Mourmouras was born in Thessaloniki in 1965.

He graduated from the Department of Economic Sciences at the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and he continued his studies at the London School of Economics (MSc Economics, 1989) and the University of London (PhD Economics, 1992). At the age of 36 he was unanimously elected Professor of Macroeconomics at the Department of Economics of the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki.

He has served as Chairman of post-graduate studies and Chairman of the first Evaluation Committee at the Department of Economics of the University of Macedonia and as Associate Editor of the South-Eastern Europe Journal of Economics (SEEJE). He has a 10-year previous academic experience in British Universities (London, Southampton, Edinburgh) and has taught courses, as visiting professor, in European and American universities.

His research activity is primarily focused on dynamic macroeconomic analysis, economic policy and monetary policy and he has received grants from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) of Great Britain, the European Commission, the Leverhulme Trust and others. He has published research papers in a number of renowned international scientific journals and collaborative books. He is the author of three books: Monetary Policy at the European Periphery (Springer, New York, 2000), New Challenges of Economic Policy in the Age of the Euro (in Greek, Athens, 2003) and The Memorandum and the Borrowing Crisis (in Greek, forthcoming, 2011)

He has served as head of the Greek delegation in the Economic Policy Committee of Ecofin (2004) and as a member of the Council of Economic Advisors of the Hellenic Ministry of Finance (2004-2005). Since 2005, he is President of the Supervisory Board of the Greek Body of Sworn – in Valuers (SOE).

He has served as Vice-Chairman in the Macedonian Society of Great Britain (1992-1994) and the Society of Hellenic-European Studies (2003–2005) and is a member of the Scientific Board of the Institute for Democracy “Konstantinos Karamanlis.”

Since 2009 he serves as economic advisor to the President of the New Democracy Party, Mr. Antonis Samaras.
