Mr. President, please communicate like Wendy Long!
By Michael Gaynor

President Bush shares the critical values of the good people of America and is able to identify and ready, willing and able to confront, contain and crush America's foreign enemies. In addition to leading the War on Terror (a war that was forced upon him — he wanted to be remembered as "The Education President"), he has been repopulating the federal courts with strict constructionists since he became President. Since his re-election, he appointed Chief Justice John Roberts to succeed the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist and nominated Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr., an eminently qualified and especially well experienced jurist, to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

But, President Bush HAS a big problem: an inability and/or reluctance to identify his domestic enemies and to expose them to the American people. For example, Senator Ted Kennedy has been assailing President Bush for years, charging that he took America to war for partisan political purposes and deliberately deceived. But when Senator Kennedy is present and the President speaks, the President graciously identifies the Senator and thanks him for coming!

Mr. President, that plays perfectly into the hands of your domestic enemies. The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth secured your re-election by exposing your opponent, Senator Kerry, while you praised his service and gave him the benefit of a baseless doubt. But you should not rely on others to do what you should (and can) do yourself.

Mr. President, the level of America's approval of both the Iraq war and your leadership dropped significantly because your domestic enemies continued to campaign after Election Day 2004 and you tried to move on to Social Security reform, energy issues and other matters. But the Democrat obstructionists would sooner see the system collapse than permit reform during a Republican presidency and America more dependent on foreign oil than less, if less dependency involves any drilling in Anwar. You ignored the contemptible attacks of your domestic enemies instead of refuting them, which gave those attacks an undeserved credibility. And the obstructionists are still blocking Social Security reform and drilling in Anwar.

Mr. President, your former rival (and steadfast supporter on winning in Iraq), Senator John McCain, was right about the American people appreciating straight talk. Sometime ago, probably early in your life, you apparently were persuaded that a gentleman does not dignify scurrilous attacks by responding to them. THERE IS AN EXCEPTION : when you are the President of the United States and your domestic political opponents are trying to destroy the trust that the American people have placeD in you by telling outrageous lies about you, REFUTE INSTEAD OF ASSUMING THAT REFUTATION IS UNNECESSARY!

Wendy E. Long, counsel to the Judicial Confirmation Network, which is doing the hard work of helping your strict constructionist judicial nominees win Senate confirmation, delightfully demonstrated how a lady can demolish one of your rabidly partisan political enemies, in "Note to Schumer: Oh, please...just come off it":

"Note to Senator Chuck Schumer from midtown Manhattan: puh-leese! Cut the posturing. It is just getting so tiresome.

"You need to come clean with the American people and tell them the truth: you have never, even for one second, considered supporting the nomination of Judge Alito, just as you never would have voted for Chief Justice Roberts.

"Your phony 'concerns' about whether Judge Alito can be 'objective' are a bunch of nonsense.

"You know that Judge Alito has for 15 years been a completely fair, unbiased, objective judge. You know that every single one of his fellow judges on the Third Circuit (including the liberals), all of his law clerks (including the liberals), and all of his former colleagues (including the liberals) — forming a great rainbow of people that includes men, women, minorities, liberals, abortion supporters, registered Democrats, feminists — ALL speak to his complete and unimpeachable integrity and objectivity as a judge.

"Your posturing is all about raising money for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, because the big New York and Hollywood money will evaporate unless you oppose Judge Alito, as well as any other Supreme Court nominee who won't roll over for their extreme left agenda: unregulated abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy, stripping God from the public square, handcuffing law enforcement so that children can be used as drug mules, etc. We saw them browbeating you during the Roberts confirmation hearings for not being tough enough on him.

"So go ahead....campaign for their agenda. Take your big bucks from George Soros. Take your cues from Howard Dean. Pull the Democratic Party into the abyss that already separates mainstream America from the radical Left's agenda.

"It would be nice if you would stop abusing the Supreme Court nomination process to press this agenda for your partisans. But if you can't do that, at least be New Yorker enough to come clean with the rest of the country, and tell them there's not a prayer of your supporting Judge Alito."

Mr. President, a gentleman can do it too! The cost of your "charm" offensive has proven to be too great for you to continue it, in the hope that civility will prove to be catching. The secular extremist leftist leaders never will succumb to your courtesy. So expose them for what they really are and show that their false claim to represent "mainstream America" is a deliberate deception.

Ms. Long obviously won't "roll over for the[] extreme left agenda: unregulated abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy, stripping God from the public square, handcuffing law enforcement so that children can be used as drug mules, etc."

Take an important lesson from Ms. Long: In addition to nominating strict constructionists as jurists, PLEASE STAND UP TO YOUR POLITICAL ENEMIES AND MARGINALIZE THEM INSTEAD OF LETTING THEM DEFAME AND MARGINALIZE YOU AND DECEIVE MANY AMERICANS WHOM EXPECT YOU TO REFUTE WHAT IS REFUTABLE!
