Literature - Various Stories
Written by Old bold knight

Dear Knights,

Here is my first submission to the literature section, it takes the form of a Prophetess instructing a Damsel about her duties to the questing knights.

It was originally going to be about the mental and physical illness suffered by the aging knight, but the prophetess eventually made an interesting narrator, switching between coldness, warmness, teaching, devotion and longing. I suspect she might be an interesting role model for the poor damsel, and hope that her dark sense of humour and sly understanding of how the relationships between knights and damsels comes across as she lectures her student. Finally, as it's a prophetess telling the story, I wanted everything that happens to be foretold in some abstract way, even down to the very last line, to reward a second reading.

A thick spray of crimson blood splattered across Payen’s helm and tabard, staining the already unrecognizable coat of arms.

The night draws ever on. The longest night of my meagre, yet suddenly curtailed life. I know that i will not survive to see the coming of the dawn, that priviliege has been forever denied to me. It is only now, armed with the certainty of my own demise, that i am able to see those very rare occasions when i was awake to see dawn as a priviliege. That simple opportunity that i failed to excercise and appreciate before, has suddenly become my single greatest regret, my deepest want and most fervent wish.

Well this is just a simple little story of what happens to the grail knights who don't build a chapel and hang out in the woods.  The story of what they were really fighting for.

Reuna rode onwards, steering Excalibur's forced trot with his knees as his hands dealt with the long tree that he had recently cut down.  He had already trimmed the branches off and was less than happy with how it had ended up.  It was no lance but it would have to do.  He glanced behind him to his many traveling items, the familiar clanking of his great sword and baggage that had stayed behind him for all these years, no longer brought comfort and in fact seemed almost alien now.
