Learn How to Make an Origami Crown

By , About.com Guide

Origami crowns are fun projects to help your children fold, since they make great dress-up props when you are finished. You can use origami paper, scrapbook paper, or wrapping paper to make your crown, as long as your sheets are perfectly square. These origami crown instructions should take about 20 minutes to complete from start to finish.

This origami crown is based on a design featured in Nick Robinson's World's Best Origami. Robinson is a member of the British Origami Society and an accomplished paper folder. His book features more than 100 different models by various origami artists, with projects suitable for all ages and skill levels.

2. Gather Your Supplies

You will need 4 sheets of 8x8 paper to make a child's crown. Start with the white side of your paper face up, then fold into a triangle.

3. Begin the First Link

Fold the triangle in half, making a slight crease to indicate the midpoint.

4. Measure the Top Ridge

5. Measure the Bottom Ridge

6. Create the Other Links for Your Paper Crown

Create 3 more identical units, using paper in the color or pattern of your choice. You can make an origami crown using 4 sheets of identical paper or mix and match paper to make a crown with a more eclectic look. Connect the 4 units as shown, then fold up the first crease in each unit as your guide.

7. Connect the Links of Your Origami Crown

Slip the edge of the first unit into the edge of the last unit to form the basic crown shape. At this point, it’s fine if your crown looks slightly square.

8. Fold a Paper Crown Shape

Carefully fold up the lower edge crease. This will stabilize your crown and allow you to mold it into the circular shape that is needed for your origami hat craft.
