Last Friday’s report by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on its first estimate of 1Q2012 GDP growth produced considerable weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth, especially among supporters of President Obama. The BEA reported that real GDP grew at a 2.2% annual rate. This was lower than the 3.0% rate growth rate reported for 4Q2011, and much lower than would be “normal” for this point in a recovery from a severe recession. read »
