Olcott Beach Cats “Caught” in the Middle

Feral/Community Cats in Managed Colony

Please see the article in The Buffalo News regarding the recent open meeting on Wednesday, April 25th, 2012, with the Newfane Town Board regarding the fate of the feral/free roaming cats in Olcott Beach, here is the link:  http://www.buffalonews.com/city/communities/lockport/article828043.ece.

There were several local animal rescue/welfare organizations at this meeting including:  Feral Cat Focus, Buffalo Humane and the Niagara County SPCA.  I was also able to attend the above mentioned meeting, and I’m hopeful that we will all be able to work toward a reasonable solution for this situation.  If you scroll down to the viewers COMMENTS of The Buffalo News article, you’ll see my feedback… you had to know I would have to give my two cents!

Here is a link for the television news story that aired on Channel 4 News, WIVB if you’re interested:  http://www.buffalonews.com/city/communities/lockport/article828043.ece.

I am very excited to report that Feral Cat Focus has just received information that The HSUS (Humane Society of the United States), Washington, D.C., is lending their support for the OLCOTT CATS, in support of TNVR in the form of a letter to the Newfane town Board.  This is truly amazing that one of the largest and most credible animal welfare organizations founded in 1954, has taken notice of this serious issue in Newfane, NY.

In case you were’nt aware, The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest and most effective animal protection organization—backed by 11 million Americans, or one in every 28. I’m proud to say that I’ve been a member of HSUS for over 20 years and I’m prouder than ever to see this national organization is lending their support on this “little” yet very big issue right in our back yard.  It really is inspiring to all of us who have taken on this cause for all of our feral/free roaming/community cats.

Check out this link to the HSUS to find out more on this incredible organization and their mission of “Celebrating Animals and Preventing Cruelty”… http://www.humanesociety.org/about/overview/.

Thanks for caring :-)

I was wondering if you could recommend any safe ideas or products that might deter some of the free roaming cats in our area from defacating in my garden beds and mulch

Hello Elaine and thanks for inquiring about safe products that deter cats from using your garden beds as a littler box. Fortunately, I have found many natural herbs, annual or perrenial plantings, and other items to be very effective. As there are so many things I’d like to recommend on this topic, I am posting on my blog to cover this topic fully… check it out…How to Make Outside Kitties Better Neighbors :-)
