Final results show that GERB's president-elect, Rossen Plevneliev won 52.5 per cent of the vote against against 47.5 per cent for his socialist opponent, former foreign minister Ivaylo Kalfin, in the second round contest on Sunday October 30.

Plevneliev, whom opinion polls repeatedly showed was the most popular minister in the cabinet, had stepped down as regional affairs minister to run as the GERB candidate.

The final result was perhaps slightly closer than exit polls and earlier opinion polls had predicted.

Plevneliev will succeed Georgi Purvanov whose was constitutionally barred from standing again after serving two five-year terms as president.

Plevneliev will now be sworn in as president on January 21 2012.
