The AppleLogic website is all about FPGAs and Apple systems. After thirty odd years since the initial introduction of the Apple II and more than fourteen years since it was discontinued, new FPGA technologies have given this fascinating and incredibly popular computer a new lease of life. The FPGA has also enabled many experimental platforms to be developed, which are the perfect foundations for building other complex vintage Apple systems, amongst other popular systems of the era.
This website is our developers diary. Here you will find the projects we have completed and those we are planning to do, including the resources that we've used to achieve what we did. You'll also see pictures and images of the history we explored as we got there. Anyone who would like to participate is welcome to do so. Typically, creating an entire expanded system inside a single FPGA is way beyond the work of a single person (well.. maybe a select few).
In this world of IP, the Applelogic concept is all public domain and available to anyone who wishes to download their own fully-configured soft Apple, and maybe even set up that dream system that in the good old days you could never have. And the bonus? Well that's the entire Apple software domain at your fingertips. You can download your favourite classics and play them as you use to; or you can try that piece of Apple software that you didn't know even existed, just to see what its like.
The concept is built around off the shelf development boards, primarily the Nanoboard 2. This flexible platform allows us to mix and match different types of logic fabric, of different speeds, of different densities, from different vendors. It also allows us to plug up a vast array of existing various peripherals and soft core libraries to enable a development approach at a system level. The NB2 can be configured as a soft Apple to suit the Apple model of choice, including the option to plug in the original set of Apple peripheral cards, giving us a platform to develop the hardware and software concept to allow others to download and set up the Apple systems we build.
