Millionaire Peteski, who won Canada's Triple Crown in 1993, was euthanized April 3 at the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania because of complications from colic. The 11-year-old stallion had been sent to the clinic around Feb. 25.
"They did a first class job there, and he fought gallantly," said owner Earle Mack, who stood the son of Affirmed at Dr. William J. Solomon's Pin Oak Lane Farm near New Freedom, Pa. "He was a tough champion and a great fighter through his illness."
Bred by Barry Schwartz, Peteski won the first race in the Canadian Triple Crown, the Queen's Plate Stakes (Can-IR) by six lengths, then added the Prince of Wales (Can-IR) and Breeders' (Can-IRT) Stakes to complete the triple. His triumph in the 1 3/16-mile Prince of Wales at Fort Erie came in track-record time of 1:54.40.
Peteski's richest win came in the $1 million Molson Export Million Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds when he beat Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Sea Hero and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Colonial Affair. Peteski, who finished third in the Super Derby (gr. I) in his final race, was retired with seven wins from 11 starts and earnings of $1,287,866. He entered stud at Darby Dan Farm near Lexington and stood there until he was moved to Pin Oak Lane for the 2000 breeding season.
Peteski, who was produced from the Nureyev mare Vive, sired nine winners, including graded stakes winner Nani Rose.
