The featured content star

Featured content represents the best that Wikipedia has to offer. These are the articles, pictures, and other contributions that showcase the polished result of the collaborative efforts that drive Wikipedia. All featured content undergoes a thorough review process to ensure that it meets the highest standards and can serve as the best example of our end goals. A small bronze star (The featured content star) in the top right corner of a page indicates that the content is featured. This page gives links to all of Wikipedia's featured content and showcases one randomly selected example of each type of content. You can view another one at random content selection.

Thylacinus in Washington DC in 1902
The Thylacine was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times. Native to Australia and New Guinea, it is thought to have become extinct in the 20th century. It was the last extant member of its genus, Thylacinus, although several related species have been found in the fossil record dating back to the early Miocene. The Thylacine became extinct on the Australian mainland thousands of years before European settlement of the continent, but it survived on the island of Tasmania along with several endemic species, including the Tasmanian Devil. Intensive hunting encouraged by bounties is generally blamed for its extinction, but other contributory factors may have been disease, the introduction of dogs, and human encroachment into its habitat. Despite being officially classified as extinct, sightings are still reported. An apex predator, it was not related to placental mammals, but because of convergent evolution it displayed the same general form and adaptations. The Thylacine was one of only two marsupials to have a pouch in both sexes (the other is the Water Opossum). The male Thylacine had a pouch that acted as a protective sheath, protecting the male's external reproductive organs while running through thick brush. (more...)

Trial by Jury

An engraved scene from the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera Trial by Jury, as illustrated in the magazine Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News of 1 May 1875. This was the pair's second collaboration and the success of this launched the famous series of thirteen further works that came to be known as the Savoy operas.

Featured list: List of U.S. states by elevation

State high points are shown as red circles. Low points as expressed with green squares, except in states whose lowest elevation spans coastlines or the shores of great lakes. Lake Champlain, Vermont's lowest elevation, is not shown on this map.

The elevation of U.S. states may be described in several ways: by the elevation of their highest point, the elevation of their lowest points, their mean elevation, and the difference between their highest points and lowest points. The following list is a comparison of elevation absolutes in the United States. Data includes interval measures of highest and lowest elevation for all fifty states and the District of Columbia.

In the list below, the elevations shown rely on the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 unless otherwise noted. The mean elevation for each state is accurate to the nearest 100 ft (30 m).
