Naughty Dog on The Last of Us’ Graphics Engine Improvements

05/20/2012 Written by Zak Islam

Following the release of the first trailer of The Last of Us since its VGA reveal, Naughty Dog has explained the considerable improvements being made to the game’s graphics engine.

Speaking on the latest episode of the PlayStation Blogcast, creative director Neil Druckmann and game director Bruce Straley delved into what specific improvements are being made regarding the PlayStation 3 exclusive’s visuals.

Firstly, they said the gameplay demo recently showcased to the press was an old build stemming from January. The newer build sees Naughty Dog “pushing a lot more environments”. Uncharted‘s lighting engine, meanwhile, has advanced in The Last of Us with the developers taking an ambient approach—this is due to the title’s environments featuring a complete lack of electricity.

The pair went on to stress that in order to pit players into the shoes of lead characters, Ellie and Joel, they’ll be putting a particular emphasis on the textures, rendering style, lighting engine and art direction.

Some very interesting statements from Naughty Dog which makes me curious about that lighting engine…

We’ll have to wait and see but I’d hope to see the passage of time reflected in a non-dynamic narrative driven day / night cycle which should only require a single static light source with the excuse being that there is no electricity. If there are torches, candles and muzzle flashes – this would introduce more sources but perhaps these would only be available in less complex scenes and therefore free up some resources for use in other ways.

  5. This means uncharted 4 will be the best looking game ever?

3 uncharteds is enough for one generation. I don’t wanna see another uncharted until the ps4 or whatever the hell they’ll call it.

    • Either way a new uncharted would either be the perfect launch title for a new system or a last big game for the ps3. Or they could do prequel game like god of war and leave uncharted 4 and god of war 4 as ps4 launch games.
