War is declared !

Let's begin the WAR of Mascots from UniX! They'll represent your favorite free software titles while battling it out in the arena using dynamite, grenades, baseball bats and other bazookas...

Exterminate your opponent in a 2D environment with toon-style scenery.

Each player controls the team of his choice (penguin, gnu, firefox, wilber,...) and must destroy his adversary using more or less casual weapons.

Although a minimum of strategy is required to vanquish, WarMUX is pre-eminently a "convivial mass murder" game where, turn by turn, each member of each team attempts to produce a maximum of damage to his opponents.

WarMUX is free (under GPL license) and free (no cash).
lami, the original author, is unreachable, so nothing can be done for this.

The consequence is that for the past month, no online game can occur. A solution is to run warmux with "-i wormux.org" (without quotes) as option.

Hopefully, the situation has been resolved

The time has finally come: there is hardly any developer left, and seeing the activity from others contributors over the past year, I don't expect much to happen in the future. The current development version has rather minor changes: improved game mode (ie including weapon), new "squad" play (teams can ally). But there's little more coming. What this means is that the next version - if any - of WarMUX, might be the last. At least, it is most probably over for the author of these words. Therefore, calling this state "death of the project" isn't too exaggerated. (note: I'm not looking forward to vultures).

I'm now looking for greener pastures. However, I had often wanted to perform a small experiment: ask people to send me postcards of where they live. So, if you feel kind of playful, why not email me at kurosu(at)free(dot)fr (you know what to replace there, don't you?) to ask my regular post address? Note: this is not related to any WarMUX release. Note: you can include your own post address in the mail or postcard in case you'd like a reply.

As mentioned in a previous news item, here is a new version of WarMUX. We thought of postponing it to May, and do a proper and clean release at that time, but there were sufficient changes without impact on the compatibility to push this release. So the changes are:
  • Fix for application loading on Android (reports about missing parts of the program, due to a shared library not loading properly)
  • Fix for network number of hosts: a bug made more than 2 impossible
  • Update the Symbian port; returning game from background could result to deadlock or white screen

We at first thought to make it only semi-official, with only a tag under svn, but the source download page has the full tarball.

Please note the windows version is just an additional zip containing the updated binary.

Please note that a difficult bug exists when one host at least has a different set of teams on his device/computer. If you intend to play online, make sure your opponents have the same teams as you, possibly asking them to clean theirs. This bug has existed forever, but only recently did changes make it more obvious.

We have found and fixed several bugs:
  • in the network code: it prevented more than 1 client in a network game (ie total 2 players)
  • in the Android port: it prevented some devices to run the game at all

We therefore plan to release a fixed version called 11.04.1 in a few days.

For the next version (named depending on when we release it), there might not be big changes:
  • Removal of some maps; you can participate in the selection by registering and reading/voting in this thread
  • Maybe a new skin (not a big win, as Ooo and nupik were removed)
  • Maybe some tweaks here and there to the menus

There's always a list of things we'd like to add. You might want to add some more, but on the other end, if you want to contribute code-wise to WarMUX, some of those tasks can be simple stuff. Either register on gna to post them or come chat with us on IRC, channels #warmux or #warmux-fr on freenode!
