History of the Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies were originally known as the Quakers and founded in 1883. The team did not have a winning record until their third year of play in 1885. By 1890, the team was known as the Phillies (short for Philadelphia) instead of the Quakers. During their early history, from 1883 to 1920, the team had fluctuating records including losing and winning seasons. They struggled and prospered season-by-season.
The team won National League Pennants in 1915, 1950, 1980, 1983, 1993, 2008 and 2009. They won National League East Division titles in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1993, 2007, 2008 and 2009. However, the Phillies did not win a World Series Championship title until 1980. The team has been notably a top contender from 2007 through 2010, winning the National League East division title four years in a row, and winning the World Series in 2008.
